Jane De Vita

Early Learning Consultant, Goodstart Early Learning

Jane De Vita has worked in early childhood in various roles for more than 30 years. In this time she has been a kindergarten teacher and director, a university tutor, a supervisor of students on practice teaching, a family day care co-ordinator, and a child care director.

Jane is currently an early childhood consultant for Goodstart Early Learning and also a parent. Jane says her children have been great teachers because even though she has knowledge and skills in supporting other families and their children, it seems much harder when dealing with the emotional ups and downs of being a parent yourself.

She loves working with families to support them in their parenting role. Some of these areas include social/emotional area of development (facilitator of Fun Friends program created by ‘Pathways’) and guiding behaviour, perceptual/motor development and its impact on future learning (Brain Gym activities), relationship of diet and behaviour (sharing Sue Dengate’s research) and the wellbeing benefits of Nature Play (links with Nature Play Qld).

Jane says parenting is the most important role we can fulfill as we guide the future generation to become the kind, confident, articulate, sustainable problem solvers our world needs for the future. She is happy to share the knowledge she has accumulated over the past many years.

Questions answered by Jane De Vita

Learning to follow directions

I have a 3.5-year-old who won’t listen to anything. We both just end up getting upset. I'm concerned that she will face problems in preschool if she won’t start following directions.

4-yr-old throwing tantrums

I have a four year old daughter, and the tantrums are worse now than they were in the ‘terrible twos’. She seems to fluctuate from happiness to meltdown so quickly and sometimes it seems that no amount of effort from us helps. Is this normal? I thought she’d be growing out of this by now.

Preparing a toddler for a new baby

My toddler isn’t happy about the arrival of our second child. How do I prepare my child for the birth a new baby?
